My name is John McMillen and I am the Chief Information Officer for Graves County Schools in Mayfield, Kentucky. It is my charge to build and maintain a state-of-the-art technological environment to support a world class education for our students and those who shape and support their education.

I also host of Music From the Front Porch on 91.3 WKMS in Murray, KY. The show airs every Saturday morning from 10 AM until 1 PM but I am only able to do every other weekend... so check in and listen to the stream at the above link.

Session Full

Seeing lots of “Session Full” signs. I found myself in a session that is sharing online resources that can be in the classroom. I know a lot of these but what I am looking for are trends. I want to see common tools and/or themes across these tools that I may incorporate into our forthcoming new web portal. I am also watching others in the room and seeing their reactions to these tools.

Symbaloo www.symbaloo.com – online bookmarking tool that provides a splash page for users to start on the web. An age old idea and there are a ton of these sites but this may be something we want to incorporate into our environment.

EditGrid www.editgrid.com online spreadsheet collaborative tool. Not sure why would use this besides Google Docs or our Live at EDU tools but embedding this type of capability might be a useful resource that drives up the adoption numbers.

Classdojo.com Here is one that will seem rather pedestrian to most but these folks are eating it up. Essentially it is a behavior reinforcement tool. Good behavior? Give ‘em a click. Bad behavior? Yep, a click. Positive points for good behavior and negative for bad. The one thing these people want is to be able to share this information outside of this tool but it doesn’t seem possible. I think I will dig into this and see what I can extract.
