App Review: MotionX GPS Drive
Uhhh… I think the GPS market just saw the bottom drop out. For $0.99 you can have a full-featured GPS on your iPhone (or iPad)… yes that’s 99 cents! Well……. kind of. There is a $25 yearly subscription fee but after a few trips with this device I think I am sold. I still have a couple of weeks to think about it as that is when my initial 30-day free trial runs out but I seriously think i will gladly fork over the money. Oh, and if you have multiple devices using the same account to purchase apps then you can install and use the subscription on them all.
I stumbled across this app a bit late as version 7.0 is now out but I suppose late is better than never to find an awesome app. I could go out and pay the $100 and up for a separate device with a bigger name but having many things in one device is one of the great advantages of an iPhone. Chalk up yet another way that my iPhone saves me money.
Some of the features include real-time turn-by-turn voice guidance, live over-the-air maps and real-time navigation, cached routes and maps for optimal performance and predictive live traffic data for optimal routing. The cached routes came in hand last week as I was in an area where I was approaching my destination where I had not signal at all. The app kept rolling along and talked me though my turns. You can also listen to music or bounce into any other app as the device keeps running in the background and the voice prompts continue. You can easily search your existing contacts or enter a new address or search for your destination.
The app has just gone social in version 7.0 with the integration of “Facebook Places which can instantly show you nearby check-in locations associated with your Facebook “friends.” With one touch, MotionX-GPS Drive will navigate to that destination instantly.”
They have also integrated Wikipedia into this version of the App:
“Wikipedia: With just a touch, users will see Wikipedia points of interest around them. This data is pulled real-time from Wikipedia articles that have been geotagged with a latitude and longitude location. From here, users can easily navigate to the specified location and/or read the related Wikipedia information on the topic. It’s better than having a tour-guide with you as you travel.”
