World in My Pocket: Imaging

I have to admit that I am not a huge “photo” kind of guy but I do take some photos with my iPhone and I have a few apps that help me take and edit photos… even though we all know the iPhone camera is one of its weaker offerings. So, here we go with the 5 applications that I use that can be listed under an “imaging” category.

CameraFlash ($0.99) - When you take a picture and it comes out kind of dark then you can open this app and apply a software-based flash effect to the photo. It appears to me that it adjusts the brightness and contrast a bit to make the photos appear as though they were taken with better lighting. There may be more effects added like shadowing as well.

Color Splash ($1.99) - This app lets you quickly and easily convert photos to black and white, while keeping your chosen details in color. For instance, if you have a photo of someones face you can convert the entire photo to black and white and then zoom in and choose their eyes to be in color.

GorillaCam (free) - My friend Bret Foster shared this app with me and it is by far my favorite camera app that I own. It adds many features that the basic camera app does not provide. I really like the digital zoom, anti shake, self timer, press anywhere and the rapid-fire features. Hey, this one is free so go get it now!

The incredible features include:

  • DIGITAL ZOOM - frame your shot exactly how you want it. Zoom in up to 4X to get the details. Customize the zoom bar for personalized placement and easy access.
  • ANTI-SHAKE - takes pictures when your phone is steady, helping you get blur-free photos.
  • TAP TO FOCUS on 3GS – allows you to focus on a particular item in the frame.
  • SELECTABLE IMAGE SIZE - take bigger pictures for maximum detail and smaller pictures for greater speed.
  • SELF-TIMER - set a custom delay for timed photos. Perfect for group shots or self-portraits. Includes audible countdown notification.
  • TIME LAPSE - take multiple photos spaced at your preferred interval. Snap photos as fast as 1 second apart, or up to 2 minutes apart.
  • CONTINUOUS RAPID-FIRE - take unlimited photos, up to 1.6 frames per second. (That’s fast!) Just press and hold the shutter to take as many photos as you want at super high speed.
  • AUTO-SAVE - keep shooting while your photos auto-save in the background. No more waiting to save before you can shoot again. Snap away, uninterrupted.
  • PRESS ANYWHERE - turn the whole screen into one big shutter button. Press anywhere to take a photo. Photograph yourself with ease!
  • 3-SHOT BURST - take three quick photographs in rapid succession. Never miss the perfect shot. No more photos ruined when someone blinks!
  • GRID OVERLAY - take your photography to the next level. Create more interesting photographs using the rule of thirds in your composition. Also great for lining up horizons or buildings.
  • BUBBLE LEVEL - take steady, level shots every time. Works in both vertical and horizontal orientation. Ideal for shots of horizons, landscapes and more. East to calibrate and easy to use.

PhotoJot ($2.99) - Photojot may have needed to be listed in the social networking section as much as here in the imaging section. Think of this app as kind of a notebook for your images as it allows you to add certain tags to your images. There aren’t a ton of features to this app but it could come in handy at times when you are needing to document more information to go with your photo. The feature list for this app includes:

  • Summary
  • Location (from Cellular or GPS)
  • Date/Time
  • Text note of any length
  • Reference photos captured from the iPhone camera or library
  • Shutter, Aperture, ISO and other related values for film photographers
  • Voice note (version 1.0.5)

Picassolino ($1.99) - This app allows you to manage your pictures and albums at Picasa Web Albums. I have to admit that the Pixelpipe app may be more robust than this one but Picassolino does have promise and may be an app you want to keep your eye on to see where the developers go with this in the future. The features include:

  • Administration of picture albums
  • Upload of pictures from the library to Picasa
  • upload of pictures directly from the iPhone camera to Picasa
  • view pictures
  • import images to iPhone library
  • browse images in landscape mode

I am hoping some of you can help me out in this category as I am rather weak on imaging apps.
